November 15th - Week Three

11am - Al-Masad defeated Zilzal by a 62-45 score, Zilzal is notorious for having short benches and players showing late and they played that song once again, arriving late and surrendering technical fouls to start the game. Good news for Zilzal was that Al-Masad didn’t really make them pay by missing almost all of the free throws. The lack of a warm-up hurt Zilzal as Al-Masad built an early lead and rode it to the win. Al-Masad didn’t have the best day shooting, going 6/29 on 3’s and 8/21 on free throws but they got the win and move into a tie for first place. Al-Masad was led by Tremell Mayers with 19 points while Zilzal got 22 points and 12 rebounds from Fareed Cheema in a losing effort.

12pm - Takathur gets a 58-50 win over Adiyat to move into a tie for first place. Takathur build an early double digit lead and held it for most of the game but Adiyat made a run to make it a 51-50 game with 2 minutes left before imploding with some poor composure leading to technicals and a loss. Faizal Merali led Takathur with 17 points while Hussain Shivji dominated with 15 points and 20 rebounds. Adiyat was led by Louis Moore with 16 points and once again were without Centre Omar Sabri who would have made a big difference in this one.

1pm - Asr defeated Inshirah by a 64-57 score, leaving Inshirah winless in three games now. Asr gets their first win but have to be a bit concerned with how close this game was. Coming into the game it felt a bit too early in the season to peg this as a must win for Inshirah but if nothing else they needed to show that they weren’t the chum in the ocean and while they didn’t get the win, they showed that they can compete and put up points. Asr was led by Captain Uzair Danish with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Umer Jamal and Zohaib Danish each added 11 points. Inshirah came in short benched and turned to their youngsters to carry the load and boy did their teenagers step up - Deen Choudhury finished with 28 points and five steals while Reyhan Choudhury finished with 22 points. If the kids can keep this type of output going then Inshirah will surely be able to turn things around.

2pm - Qariyah defeated Tamjeed 46-42 in a great game between two of the stronger teams in Tier-2. After opening the season with a pair of wins including a blowout win in their first game, Tamjeed may have come into this game a bit too overconfident with talk of running the table in Tier-2, Qariyah provided the cold shower on that party in a game high on emotion as former Tamjeed Young Gun Rohan Mohammed Ghori was playing against his old team and older brother and relishing every big play he made including some key steals down the stretch. Tamjeed held the early lead but in he second half breakdowns in defending resulted in a stream of fouls and a disruption to their game plan. Qariyah made key baskets when they needed it to take the win despite Tamjeed dominating the rebounding column 32-18. Qariyah was led by Captain Saad Ahmad with 20 points while Tamjeed was led by Andre Henriques with 11 points.

3pm - Ikhlas routed Fatiha by a 56-42 final score where they held a 29-14 lead at halftime and never looked back. Fatiha looked dysfunctional offensively most of the game and with some of the new players that may have been reasonable to expect but this game was ugly for the veteran squad. Ikhlas got a dominant performance from Chad Mondesir with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 steals as he anchored the middle of the zone defence and changed a number of shots that he didn’t end up blocking. Zamam Khan scored 19 points in his season debut while Zakariya Tmj Khan put up 12 points. Fatiha was led by Mike Jacobs with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Tyler-Anthony Tessier finished with 8 points.

4pm - The game of the day in Tier-1 featured Kursi defeating Falaq by a 77-74 final score in overtime. Both teams were missing key players due to injury and Falaq came in with no subs - a key point that likely cost them the game. Falaq held the lead most of the game and with three minutes left saw Ahsan Mahmood foul out with his team up five. With Falaq now having to play short a man the rest of the way, Kursi was able to find the open player and tie the game up sending it to overtime tied at 67-67. Overtime saw some frantic offence with big shots from both teams but it was Kursi that was able to prevail as Falaq was not able to overcome fatigue and being down a player in the final minutes. Kursi was led by Mannahel Choudhry with 22 points and Huziafa Khan with 18 points while Talha Basit finished with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. Falaq was led by Nathan Campbell with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Ahsan Mahmood with 20 points before fouling out.
