November 22nd - Week Four

11am - Falaq defeated Adiyat 48-40 to move into a tie for first place, meanwhile Adiyat is tied for last and yet to win this season. Falaq should have sole possession of first had it not been for silly fouls that resulted in them playing the last three minutes of the game and OT down a player and giving away their lead and the win. Tahir Khan led all scorers with 15 points but it wasn’t enough for Adiyat. Falaq was led by Sherif Shehata with 12 points and Ahsan Mahmood with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

12pm - Kursi defeats Bayyina 45-36 in another game that saw first vs worst. Bayyina is known for their size and expected advantage on rebounding but they were surprisingly outmatched on the glass 32-27. Kursi was led by Huziafa Khan with 17 points and Talha Basit with 10 points and 16 rebounds who clearly was being under-utilized when he was with Fatiha. Bayyina was led by Paul Esplen with 11 points.

1pm - The game of the day saw Qariyah get an overtime win over Ma’un by a 64-63 final score. Ma’un will lament how this one got away when they review the game tape, they held the lead for most of the game but were unable to hit front end bonus shots in the final minutes to seal it and played poor defence as a team allowing Qariyah to get transition scores. Saad Ahmad carried Qariyah as he poured in 44 points and 14 rebounds, his support was limited but his teammates knew to feed the hot hand. Some key plays were made down the stretch by Babur Ali who left Ma’un after last season in a reported cost cutting move which now they surely regret. Ma’un was led by Jamal Khan with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Moazzam Sheikh added 10 points. Aside from the aforementioned poor team defence from Ma’un (and that’s putting it lightly) their shot selection was equally poor, high percentage jumpers were declined in favour of launching three pointers - the team leads the league in three pointers attempted and the worst percentage which is a bad combination. That said this was a fun game to watch so circle their next matchup on April 3rd which will likely be a critical game to determine the final standings.

2pm - Tamjeed held on to defeat Asr 33-29 but cannot be pleased with the result. Asr was leading most of the game but an injury to Uzair Danish turned the tide and allowed Tamjeed to grind out a close win. Tamjeed was led by Andre Henriques with 15 points while Asr was led by Uzair Danish with 15 points in just over a half before he left the game with a lower body injury. After blowing out Inshirah to open the season, Tamjeed has struggled to get their offence going and need to turn it around quickly.

3pm - Nas defeated Takathur by a 57-48 final score in another great match-up between these rivals. Takathur came into this game with a short bench and it seemed to hurt them down the stretch. Nas was led by Sanel Sehic with 19 points, including six (long range) three pointers. He was supported by Jamal SaugaCity Bundy Douglas with 16 points as he turned it on in the second half after a heckler said he looked tired. Takathur was led by Faizal Merali with 15 points while Alhussein Gillani and Fahim Merali each finished with 10 points.

4pm - Kawthar got their first win of the season over Inshirah by a 66-27 final score as they built a 42-19 lead at the half and coasted the rest of the way. Kawthar was led by Mudasir Marfatia with 22 points mainly of his lighting it up from the outside with six three-pointers. Komail Rawjani added 12 points in the winning effort. Inshirah was led by Reyhan Choudhury with 12 points and the presence of his brother Deen Choudhury would have made this game a lot closer but he was unavailable to play this week.

November 15th - Week Three

11am - Al-Masad defeated Zilzal by a 62-45 score, Zilzal is notorious for having short benches and players showing late and they played that song once again, arriving late and surrendering technical fouls to start the game. Good news for Zilzal was that Al-Masad didn’t really make them pay by missing almost all of the free throws. The lack of a warm-up hurt Zilzal as Al-Masad built an early lead and rode it to the win. Al-Masad didn’t have the best day shooting, going 6/29 on 3’s and 8/21 on free throws but they got the win and move into a tie for first place. Al-Masad was led by Tremell Mayers with 19 points while Zilzal got 22 points and 12 rebounds from Fareed Cheema in a losing effort.

12pm - Takathur gets a 58-50 win over Adiyat to move into a tie for first place. Takathur build an early double digit lead and held it for most of the game but Adiyat made a run to make it a 51-50 game with 2 minutes left before imploding with some poor composure leading to technicals and a loss. Faizal Merali led Takathur with 17 points while Hussain Shivji dominated with 15 points and 20 rebounds. Adiyat was led by Louis Moore with 16 points and once again were without Centre Omar Sabri who would have made a big difference in this one.

1pm - Asr defeated Inshirah by a 64-57 score, leaving Inshirah winless in three games now. Asr gets their first win but have to be a bit concerned with how close this game was. Coming into the game it felt a bit too early in the season to peg this as a must win for Inshirah but if nothing else they needed to show that they weren’t the chum in the ocean and while they didn’t get the win, they showed that they can compete and put up points. Asr was led by Captain Uzair Danish with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Umer Jamal and Zohaib Danish each added 11 points. Inshirah came in short benched and turned to their youngsters to carry the load and boy did their teenagers step up - Deen Choudhury finished with 28 points and five steals while Reyhan Choudhury finished with 22 points. If the kids can keep this type of output going then Inshirah will surely be able to turn things around.

2pm - Qariyah defeated Tamjeed 46-42 in a great game between two of the stronger teams in Tier-2. After opening the season with a pair of wins including a blowout win in their first game, Tamjeed may have come into this game a bit too overconfident with talk of running the table in Tier-2, Qariyah provided the cold shower on that party in a game high on emotion as former Tamjeed Young Gun Rohan Mohammed Ghori was playing against his old team and older brother and relishing every big play he made including some key steals down the stretch. Tamjeed held the early lead but in he second half breakdowns in defending resulted in a stream of fouls and a disruption to their game plan. Qariyah made key baskets when they needed it to take the win despite Tamjeed dominating the rebounding column 32-18. Qariyah was led by Captain Saad Ahmad with 20 points while Tamjeed was led by Andre Henriques with 11 points.

3pm - Ikhlas routed Fatiha by a 56-42 final score where they held a 29-14 lead at halftime and never looked back. Fatiha looked dysfunctional offensively most of the game and with some of the new players that may have been reasonable to expect but this game was ugly for the veteran squad. Ikhlas got a dominant performance from Chad Mondesir with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 steals as he anchored the middle of the zone defence and changed a number of shots that he didn’t end up blocking. Zamam Khan scored 19 points in his season debut while Zakariya Tmj Khan put up 12 points. Fatiha was led by Mike Jacobs with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Tyler-Anthony Tessier finished with 8 points.

4pm - The game of the day in Tier-1 featured Kursi defeating Falaq by a 77-74 final score in overtime. Both teams were missing key players due to injury and Falaq came in with no subs - a key point that likely cost them the game. Falaq held the lead most of the game and with three minutes left saw Ahsan Mahmood foul out with his team up five. With Falaq now having to play short a man the rest of the way, Kursi was able to find the open player and tie the game up sending it to overtime tied at 67-67. Overtime saw some frantic offence with big shots from both teams but it was Kursi that was able to prevail as Falaq was not able to overcome fatigue and being down a player in the final minutes. Kursi was led by Mannahel Choudhry with 22 points and Huziafa Khan with 18 points while Talha Basit finished with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. Falaq was led by Nathan Campbell with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Ahsan Mahmood with 20 points before fouling out.

November 8th - Week Two

11am - Al-Masad got their first win of the season by crushing Inshirah 88-41. While Inshirah did much better offensively in this one that their debut loss, their defence needs attention as they have given up 174 points in two games. Al-Masad was led by Tremell Mayers with 20 points and Ahmed Elmoursi with 15 points. Inshirah was led by Reyhan Choudhury with 16 points.

12pm - Falaq defeats Bayyina by a 61-48 score, Nathan Campbell made a big return with 15 points & 12 rebounds while Sherif Shehata added 14 points. Darko Trifunovic put up 13 points and 10 rebounds and combined with Campbell gives Falaq a strong front court presence. Bayyina was led by Stefan Mioc with 11 points and Tyrone Ford with 9 points while rookieSaifullah Khan finished with 8 points. The win puts Falaq in first place while Bayyina drops to last.

1pm - Kursi made their debut with a victory over defending champs Nas by a 67-65 score. Kursi built up an early lead and seemed on the verge of blowing Nas out but the champs made a game of it and had a chance to win the game but couldn’t hit the buzzer beater. Kursi was led by Mannahel Choudhry with 27 points and Rory St.Jean with 19 points. Nas got 19 points from Sanel Sehic while Jamal SaugaCity Bundy Douglas added 17 points. Nas has had some injuries so the new players brought in will have to adjust quickly to get the team back to winning.

2pm - Tamjeed defeated Ma’un 44-36 to take sole possession of first place. Tamjeed was coming off their blowout win over Inshirah but Ma’un gave them a run and could have won but fell in love with their three point shot (7 for 29) which hurt them. Tamjeed could have iced this one early if their free throw shooting was decent, 15/31 will not get it done. Tamjeed was led byMohamed Abdurbo with 14 points while Christopher Bewhey added 8 points & 13 rebounds. Ma’un was led by Moazzam Sheikh with 16 points and was carrying his team early; Jamal Khan was limited to 3 points but finished with 10 rebounds as the burden of covering the Tamjeed bigs fell on him and seemed to wear him down.

3pm - Takathur got a 59-45 win over Ikhlas putting both teams to a 1-1 record. Takathur built an early lead and kept building on it with a great team effort considering they were short benched. Faizal Merali and Alykhan Bhimjieach put up 16 points, Bhimji with a scorching 5/6 on 3’s. Hussain Shivjiadded 11 points & 13 rebounds. Ikhlas was led by Zakariya Tmj Khan with 25 points & 9 rebounds and Yasser Malik with 8 points.

4pm - Qariyah debuted to a 47-36 win over Kawthar in a game with some fireworks. Passion spilled over early and resulted in some silly technicals but Qariyah used their size to control the second half and pull away. Isfan Prebtani led Kawthar with 17 points on 5/7 shooting on three’s and had the crowd on his side. Qariyah was led by Saad Ahmad with 14 points and Babur Ali with 12 points.

Friday 6 November 2015

November 1st - Week One

11am - The season opened with Ma'un getting a 43-32 win over Al-Masad, a new team to the league. The players are familiar with each other from outside of the league and Ma'un seemed to relish the opportunity to open their season with a win over their rivals. Ma'un was led by Jamal Khan with 14 points while Al-Masad was led by Masuud Issa with 13 points. Ma'un also got a boost with the return of Ahmed Khalid who was a late signing, his leadership on both ends of the court will be a boost for this young team.
Ma'un now has half as many wins as they did all last season so a good start.

12pm - Zilzal got a 42-36 win over Asr in a game that saw Asr make a late run but run out of time before being able to tie it up. Fareed Cheema pitched in with 10 points for Zilzal in their win.

Bayyina got off to a strong start led by Stefan Mioc who finished with 14 points as the team used their size to dominate the paint early. Ikhlas made their comeback thanks to the hot shooting of Andrew Motta who finished with 27 points while Chad Mondesir finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Bayyina fed off the energy of Saifullah Khan as the youngster made his debut in a touching father/son moment with Abdul-Rehman Khan.

3pm - Falaq worked for a 47-39 win over Takathur. After losing some players in the offseason, Falaq retooled in a big was as they got the standard big game from Ahsan Mahmood with 13 points while new comers Sherif Shehata (13 points) and Darko Trifunovic 13 points and 15 rebounds were key.
